Here’s my short Canon SX20 IS review: I've had this digital camera nearly a year now and I have to say I completely love it. The picture quality is fantastic and the 20x telephoto lens is brilliant. I am not a expert photographer and use this camera mainly for taking shots of the family and when travelling. The Canon SX20 IS is easy to use for people like me who want a 'point and shoot' camera with a few extra features but it also has functionality that the more experienced photographer will love.

The background to my Canon SX20 IS review is that I needed a camera with a powerful telephoto lens together with optical stabilization and AA batteries. The Canon SX20 IS delivers on all three requirements. The lens is a 28-560 35 mm equivalent. I use this as a backup for my digital SLR and find that I often leave the SLR at home. Using AA batteries is particularly convenient when travelling and is essential if you camp. I take a dozen AA batteries with me when I go camping and do not have to worry about where I will plug in my charger. I can even use rechargeable AA batteries. I can buy AA batteries at most gas stations and all groceries and unlike proprietary Lithium batteries that fail after a year and are expensive to replace, the AA batteries are relatively inexpensive. I can summarize my Canon SX20 IS review by stating that it is a high quality, functionally rich camera which I totally recommend.

Canon SX20 IS Review: This is an excellent super zoom camera. I've had other models by Sony and Olympus but the Canon SX20 IS is in another league completely. The quality of the lens is excellent and the image stabilization is extremely effective. The image detail provided in distant telephoto shots is wonderful, especially when compared to previous cameras I have owned. The Canon SX20 IS has a really superb lens.
Although it may be controversial, I'm pleased to use the 'i-Contrast' dynamic range extender. It works out great for me. While the exposure balance across an image may sometimes turn out noticeably unnatural, it has been far easier to correct for that later as opposed to my manually bringing out detail in selected excessively dark areas in a normally exposed picture. The i-Contrast has turned out to be my favorite extra feature. Dynamic range is a most important ongoing issue in photography, and this little tool provides major useful assistance with that.
The next point in this Canon SX20 IS review is a very personal one. You can either choose to use automatic mode or experiment with various settings to make the camera function optimally the way you want to use it. I took dozens of images in a variety of conditions and tinkered until I found the best settings for me. I believe it really makes a huge difference. I'm so glad that Canon has engineered so many operational choices into the camera. Customizing the camera setup greatly increased my satisfaction with it. However, I can see that the automatic features would be a real bonus for hobbyists.
The video works well too. I've always been more interested in still shots, but I'm using the handy video function more and more frequently. As far as my Canon SX20 IS review is concerned this is clearly a five out of five stars camera.
